Several quarters were minted under America the Beautiful series in the Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Denver mints. The composition of these coins was ninety percent copper and ten percent nickel, whereas the coin edges were kept reeded. These different varieties have the same monetary value and dimensions except for the images on the other side.

Coming back to the first quarter, the 2016 Shawnee National Forest Quarter was designed by artists Justin Kunz and Jim Licaretz. While the Denver, San Francisco, and Philadelphia mints produced these quarters for circulation, several S-proof quarters and silver-proof quarters were minted as well by the San Francisco mint for collectors.

On the obverse side, you’ll see the portrait of President George Washington facing to the left of the coin. Besides giving the portrait subtle facial features, the artist worked on detailing the hair, depicting the hairstyle most politicians at the time had. The portrait’s back hair is also seen tied with a ribbon.

On the top coin rim, you’ll see the phrase United States of America, and, on the bottom, you’ll see the coin’s denomination written. On the coin’s left side, there is the word liberty written, whereas, on the right side, you have the phrase In God We Trust struck in three rows.

The mint mark can be seen directly below the phrase. All of the different varieties have the same obverse side, but different reverse sides. This quarter variety has an illustration of the Shawnee forest park where a rock cliff can be clearly seen covered with plants and other natural elements found within the environment.

A gliding eagle is also seen at the coin’s top right curve. The illustration is marked with a circle that surrounds it. On the left coin edge, you’ll see Illinois written, whereas, on the right side, you’ll notice the famous phrase E Pluribus Unum.

At the coin’s bottom edge, you’ll see the date 2016 minted on the coin surface. While the circulated coins were minted in the three mints, the San Francisco mint produced two types of proof coins mentioned earlier.

William Jasper is seen carrying the regiment flag while tackling the gunfire from the British vessel shown in the illustration. These coins were minted in low quantities but had no effect on their monetary value. Most of the circulated coins only sell for their face value. The San Francisco mint also produced proof coins which are valued higher than the coins minted for circulation.

The idea of using these designs to celebrate the cultural heritage of America was inspired by the 50-State Quarter initiative where several artists and designers came up with varied coin designs that were minted to depict the different states of America. It was decided that each year five new designs under the 50 states quarter should be minted.

The initiative was carried throughout ten years, with each coin representing one state. Due to the massive success of this initiative, the US treasury and relevant authorities decided to mint coins that would depict historically significant locations on the coin’s reverse side. This decision led to the minting of five different varieties of the 2016 quarter with varying reverse designs.

Although changes were made on the reverse side, the obverse image was not changed. The sculptor James Flanagan designed the original quarter from where the obverse image was taken. As this initiative was also appreciated by the people, the US authorities are keen to carry this tradition and are now working on the American women’s quarter program which started in 2022 and will carry on through to 2025.

Like the previous initiatives, five different versions will be launched annually, representing the women of America depicting their cultural impact and significance. Nevertheless, the 2016 quarter is a famous series of quarters and a must-have for every coin collector out there.
