History

As mentioned, the 2002 Quarter was a part of the 50 State Quarters program, a 10-year initiative that honored and created different and unique designs for each of the 50 states. The 2002 quarter features five designs on the obverse; Tennessee, Ohio, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Indiana.

The designs are related to the state’s history, and each shows something emblematic of its unique history, traditions, and symbols.

As noted, these coins were struck first from 1999 until 2008, and the U.S. mint came out each year with five different designs featuring five different states. Interestingly, the coins were released on the official states’ birthdays or dates when they entered the Union.

The idea behind this program was to support the new generation of coin collectors, and interestingly, it became one of the most popular programs ever. These 2002 quarters were particularly interesting to children due to their unique reverse design, which gravely differed from those regularly seen on coins.

Details

The obverse design was done by John Flanagan, who created the design in 1932. Given that the obverse features the bust of the Founding Father, George Washington, these coins were commonly known as Washington quarters.

Flanagan’s design was an adaption of George’s face profile initially done by the French sculptor Jean-Antoine Houdon. Talking of the designer of the reverse, in the 10 years of the 50 States program, various sculptors and designers joined the project of creating unique designs.

Dianne Weaver and John Mercanti developed the designs for the 2002 Quarter. As mentioned, the obverse features George Washington’s bust facing left, surrounded by the capitalized inscription “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” on the upper rim.

The denomination is placed on the lower rim, “ONE QUARTER.” On the right side of the president’s bust, we can see a part of the American motto, “IN GOD,” while the remaining part, “WE TRUST,” is struck on this right side. The mint mark is on the obverse, underneath the part of the motto “WE TRUST.”

These coins were made of 75% copper and 25% nickel. The 2002 quarter weight is around 5.67 grams, while the diameter is 24.26 mm or 1.5 inches. The edge is reeded, and the coin’s thickness is around 1.75 mm or 0.09 inches.

The total mintage of the 2002 quarter is 3.3 billion, which is very high and affects the value. These quarters were struck at Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco for business use, and the U.S. mint struck five different designs at each mint.

The 2002 quarter Ohio is the 2nd coin to be released in 2002 and is 17th in the 50 State program. As mentioned, the obverse is the same as the original 1932 Washington quarter and depicts the first president of the U.S.

The reverse honors the state’s place in aviation history, and it was designed and engraved by Donna Weaver. We can see an astronaut on the right side of the coin while the Wright Flyer airplane is on the left side. On the upper rim, we can see the capitalized name of the state “OHIO” and the year “1803”.

In case you are not familiar with this historical fact, 1803 is the year Ohio joined the Union and became one of the U.S. States. Underneath the Wright Flyer is the inscription “BIRTHPLACE OF AVIATION PIONEERS.”

On the lower rim, we can see the mintage year “2002” and the American motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM” underneath it. The motto loosely translates from Latin to “Out of many, one” and symbolizes American unity and power.

This design differs greatly from those usually struck on coins, explaining why many like to have them, especially in sets. Talking of the Ohio quarter minted in Philadelphia in 2002, these coins have a P mint mark on the obverse and are very easy to spot.

The total mintage of the 2002 P Quarter- Ohio is 217,200,000. Interestingly, the Philadelphia Mint coined high-quality quarters, which is unusual for Philadelphia Mint, which is known for striking coins in poor condition.
